Kaye Adams officially opened the new Crownpoint Community Garden on Friday 14th September.

Kay Adams opens Crownpoint Community Garden

The garden has been developed over the last year on derelict land on Crownpoint Road next to St Mungo’s Academy, transforming it from an overgrown dumping site into a beautiful garden, providing local people with a space to grow their own food as well as a calm and relaxing place to sit and enjoy being outside surrounded by nature.

The project has been a great example of partnership work with local community groups such as Playbusters working closely with St Mungo’s Academy, Glasgow City Council and the NHS and with local volunteers and pupils at the school doing a lot of the work to create the garden.

James McMahon, Greenspace Development Officer at Glasgow City Council said “The efforts of a number of local organisations and individuals have created a valuable and beautiful resource for the East End of Glasgow.”

The project, funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund and Glasgow City Council, has helped to foster a real sense of achievement in the community by giving people of all backgrounds the opportunity to learn new skills such as building raised beds or learning to grow their own food.  The garden also aims to help protect the environment by creating new wildlife habitats and increasing biodiversity in the area as well as raising awareness about the impact of food production on the environment.

The garden includes wildlife areas, ornamental flowers, beautiful carved wooden gazebo and sculptures as well as raised beds for growing vegetables which are maintained by local groups and individuals.  Playbusters run a drop in session at the garden every Monday from 1:30 to 3:30pm where people can come along and get involved or ask questions and get tips on vegetable growing in a fun and informal environment.

Local resident, James Doonan said “I’m really enjoying coming down to the garden. I’ll be losing some weight, meeting new people and learning new things”
