Playing for Real – The Universal Language

Playing for Real – The Universal Language

Playing for Real – The Universal Language

Polish, African, Asian and Scottish Children have found something that brings them all together – playing traditional games.

Following last week’s launch by Glasgow Life of their Playing for Real strategy, which aims to create more opportunities for children to enjoy free play, Playbusters added its wholehearted support, stating that play projects had made a significant difference in some of Glasgow’s poorest communities.

North East Charity, Playbusters, are one step ahead when it comes to Childs Play. Through support from Inspiring Scotland Go Play they have been delivering ‘Free Play’ sessions in parks, schools, streets and backcourts throughout the East End and North of the City. From den building, tree climbing, peever, skipping ropes and dodge ball, children and families from all backgrounds and cultures are playing together. If ever there was a way to break down language barriers then this is it. In Cranhill where there is a wide cultural mix from African, Polish, Asian and Scottish backgrounds children are learning to play games from ‘past times’.

Play Ranger, Robert Doyle said “ The Playbusters team came into work in Strone Road with other workers from PEEK. At first the children and parents were unsure but now they just can’t get enough. Children from all ethnic backgrounds are learning to play together and have become friends. One day we were building a den and they all got involved by sharing ideas and the next week they had wanted to make a flag for the den. Free Play encourages their creativity, problem solving, risk taking and improves activity levels. The one thing we notice is that they have so much fun and that happiness shows through”

The accreditation is for the Design, Delivery and Development of Educational and Play Activities for children and their guardians/carers. Playbusters would like to say a Big Thank You to Jim Hossack and John McKechnie from Glasgow Regeneration Agency who supported us through the process.

Lottery Chief visits Playbusters

Lottery Chief visits Playbusters

Newly appointed Chair to the Big Lottery Fund, Peter Ainsworth, visited the East End this week to see for himself some of the marvellous work that the Big Lottery is funding in the East End. He was joined by BLF Director for Scotland, Jackie Killeen.

Top of his list was the award winning Playbusters who received funding over a year ago for their ‘Connecting Generations’ programme that operates right across the East End.

He was given a warm East End welcome by Project Manager, Margaret Layden, and around 30 volunteers and staff at Wellpark Community Hall. Some of the volunteers performed an intergenerational drama production they had worked on with ADD-art and it went down a storm. Then Playbusters young volunteers gave the visitors and other people attending a viewing of an exhibition of work that included intergenerational work, environmental programmes, activities for young people, Go Play activities and volunteering programmes.

Playbusters celebrates Volunteers' Week

Playbusters celebrates Volunteers' Week

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The Week plays a huge part in raising the profile of the millions of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, while inspiring others to get involved too.

We celebrated Volunteers’ Week on Friday 3rd June 2011 and the night was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The evening saw a whole family of five volunteering together and receiving certificates as well as another family where three generations are volunteering together. The event gave volunteers the opportunity to share their experiences over shared food and refreshments. It was also a fantastic opportunity for staff to enjoy a relaxed evening with the volunteers.
