Environmental work

Over the past years we have been working with three local schools through their eco-committees: Quarrybrae, St.Marks and St.Michaels. We have carried out bulb planting at Beardmore Park, community garden at Cuthelton Terrace Sheltered Housing and our new plot at Westhorn Allotments. We recently held an eco event at Beardmore Park to bring the three schools together and the children were treated to a talk on recycling, snake display, bulb planting and were presented with a certificate for their work. Future work is planned through our allotment, a rooftop garden in Parkhead and a community garden in Bridgeton.

Intergenerational Project

The Intergenerational programme was introduced to bring young people and people together to increase dialogue between them and to address the negative perceptions held by both groups. There are few opportunities for these groups to meet and this can have the effect of creating an imbalance within communities through the lack of communication.

We have worked with local schools and have carried out a variety of fun workshops including video and audio and sharing of stories. We have also carried out joint visits to places of interest such as the Transport Museum, the People's Palace and the Scotland Street Museum. This provided the opportunityfor about things such as 'the past and future' in terms of the community. There has also been the opportunity for the sharing of skills: the young people demonstarted the Nintendo Wii and gave workshops to the older group on the use of mobile phones. The older group then demonstrated some of the traditional skills such as knitting.

Older people have also assisted us in club activities with the Happy Feet Line Dancers giving dance classes, The older group and young people took part in gardening activities together. There was also lots of opportunities for storytelling in terms of changes in the East End from its industrial past to the future regeneration . In effect, older people and young people are becoming 'both teachers and learners' as they share skills through play activities and informal learning opportunities.

Thanks to funding from Miss Agnes H Hunter's Trust and Scottish Community Foundation we will be able to continue this further and develop into other areas of the East End.

Playbusters are involved in various projects to meet the needs of different age groups. These have been developed with parents, community groups and other agencies.

Easy Spanish: This is an initiative aimed at introducing a second language to pre fives. This will follow along the family learning and lifelong learning route. For further information follow the link at the top of this page.

Activate: This is a community development programme aimed at volunteers and community activists in the East End. It offers real opportunities for further education and employment. For further information follow the link at the top of this page.

Pre fives: We continue to develop services for pre fives and do so through co-ordinated play sessions and support to groups. For further information follow the link at the top of this page.

Active Communities
Two Activate Courses are currently ongoing in the East End and we will shortly be holding an information session prior to a further course beginning. The Activate course is suitable for volunteers of all ages to develop their skills in community work. The course is enjoyable and challenging and has been well received by all of those particpating. Glasgow University is currently carrying out some research on the impact of this course on individuals and community organisations in the East End. As a result of the Acivate course there are now a number of people from the community undertaking a BA in Community Development at Glasgow University, some are studying with John Wheatley College on Access to Working with Communities at John Wheatley College and others working sessionally in their communities.

Through an award and funding from the Scottish Executive for the 'Standing Up to Antisocial Behaviour Award' Playbusters have begun work on an Intergenerational Project in Parkhead/Shettleston. Workshops are being carried out with Primary 7 classes from two schools together with Pensioner groups. Assisted by EEIB and Glasgow City Council Museums the project will be exhibited at Peoples Palace in April 2007 and demonstrate the work of all in breaking down the 'Generational Barriers'.
